Shea nuts are mostly harvested in Ghana’s northern regions, where they are processed to create shea butter, a type of vegetable fat. Shea butter has several health benefits for people and is largely utilized in skincare and hair care products. A few notable benefits include anti-ageing, acne prevention, and relief from dry skin and scalp.
Bubune Africa is a Ghanaian-owned enterprise and a supplier of unrefined shea butter. Founded in 2019, Bubune Africa works with around 700 women in Ghana’s Northern Regions to gather shea nuts and convert them into shea butter in collaboration with the Women’s Cooperative Group, Tiyumtaba, a women’s organization.
These women gather the nuts during the harvest season, process them into shea butter and sell it. Together, we can accomplish much more than we can individually. Instead of working alone and producing less, the women are assembled into groups to increase their productivity. The nuts are acquired from collectors and supplied to the women for processing. By doing this, they can make up to five times as much income as they otherwise would have if they had to work alone.
The urban-rural movement in several communities in the Northern Region has seen a large decrease due to the initiative launched by Bubune Africa. The processing plant in some towns that process the shea nuts into shea butter has been upgraded to satisfy consumer demand as a result of this initiative. For these communities, particularly the women, this has resulted in the provision of jobs and stable revenue.
Bubune Africa recently began working with the Import Promotion Desk (IPD), an international trade organization that supports exports from developing countries. With this new partnership, Bubune Africa hopes to forge a solid relationship with IPD and increase the exportation of Ghana’s raw shea butter to the international market.
Bubune Africa aims to be a global supplier of high-quality, unrefined shea butter for the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries due to the increasing demand for shea butter in the world.
